Anyone who has ever worked out has tried or at least thought about trying some form of dietary supplement to speed the process along. Unfortunately for the all- American aspiring athlete, supplements are for the most part a waste of money, are at times quite dangerous and are pushed by BS marketing campaigns that run the gambit from misleading to outright lies. Why would they do such things do you ask? The answer is the same as it always is; money. To the tune of about $27 billion dollars a year! And that doesn’t even include the steroid market or the underground marketing presented by companies selling supplements under the table so the true value of the supplement market is probably closer to $50 billion a year. But lets focus on you. Is it all crap or can anything truly help without risking your life? Let’s find out…

Getting enough sleep is a constant problem for me. I often work to 8-9pm and have 6am appointments almost every day. By the time I get home at night, grab some dinner, see the wife and kids it is past 10pm. To make matters worse this is usually the only alone time I have all day and the only time I have to workout. Since my job requires that I at least look like I’m in shape skipping workouts is not in the cards. Are you having trouble getting enough sleep as well? Let’s see what we can do ….

Cherries are one of nature’s super-foods. They taste great and are one of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat. Why are they so good for you? Check it out…
1) Reduces post workout soreness- according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers found that men who drank cherry juice experienced 25% less delayed onset muscle soreness. They also felt recovered from exercises quicker than their non-juice drinking fellows.
2) They are good for your heart – University of Michigan researchers found that a daily dose of cherries lowers cholesterol, reduces fat in the liver and limits damage to the arterial walls caused by stress.
3) Cherries are natural painkillers- the same Michigan study found that cherries reduces pain triggering inflammation levels within the body.
4) Cherries keep you young – they contain melatonin which reduces levels of oxidative stress therefore delaying signs of aging.
5) Cherries help to keep diabetes at bay – compounds called anthocyanins may help the pancreas better regulate insulin levels in the body.
You don’t need to eat a lot, a 1/2 cup daily will do quite nicely. Stick with raw cherries and steer clear of chocolate covered cherries (sorry), cherry tarts, cherry pie (truly sorry) and any other fat packed, sugar dripping desert. They taste great in their natural form and will add years to your life. Eat up!

As we all know, Steve Jobs died recently and his death has sparked many a commentary on the man himself. Without question Jobs was brilliant. He had great insight about what the public wanted and also the innovation to take those ideas and bring them to both the serious techno geek and common man alike. He also was reported to be an egomaniac, arrogant and at times downright ruthless. Having never met the man I have no way of knowing who the real Steve Jobs truly was, but an exert from a speech he gave a few years ago when he was just diagnosed with cancer shows that regardless of his achievements or personal faults that he was a practical, introspective man who at least in this moment saw wisdom. There are a lot of things that can help lower your blood pressure and some of them are so simple that you can started immediately. Now we have all heard about losing the salt shaker and picking more low sodium foods for our diets. But you may not be aware that lowering sodium intake alone is seldom successful. Although the most common injuries while playing golf usually affect the lower back and hips (75% of all golf injuries result from poor swing mechanics) a very common problem that seems to be on the rise is “golf elbow”. The technical term is medial epicondylitis and refers to pain on the inside of the elbow. Tendons attach muscle to bone and are easily stressed from repetitive motion such as in the golf swing. A lot of other things can affect it as well so your swing may not be the main culprit, but without relieving the problem activities like golf can make it far worse over time.
The trick is to alleviate the inflammation and therefore the pain so it can heal up ….

As my bus pulled up in front of the barracks that were to be my home for the next four months, I looked out at a sign hanging high over the parade ground. In simple bold type it read: THE MORE YOU SWEAT OVER HERE, THE LESS YOU’LL BLEED OVER THERE. Trust me, that was not the first time that I wondered what I had gotten myself into. But I would come to see the wisdom of the those words and have never forgotten their simple message. You need to embrace this philosophy as well, not only to pass basic training but to give yourself the best chance of completing your mission and making it home safely. Welcome to this first post concerning the physical fitness needs of today’s young (and sometimes, not so young) recruits. For each branch of service I will outline the requirements of the PFT (Physical Fitness Test) and a workout to help prepare you for basic training.
